Action text: Mayor Nirenberg opened the Public Hearing to gather community input on the proposed paid sick leave ordinance. City Attorney Andy Segovia presented the history and terms of the proposed paid sick leave ordinance. He stated that the ordinance would apply to all employers except governmental entities effective January 1, 2019. He noted that the requirements for paid sick leave would begin on August 1, 2019 for employers with more than five employees and on August 1, 2021 for those with five or less employees. He stated that the ordinance would require employers to provide one hour of earned sick leave for every 30 hours worked with a yearly cap of 64 hours for medium and large employers and 48 hours for small employers with 15 or fewer employees. He noted that earned paid sick leave would be available for use as soon as it was accrued. He stated that paid sick leave could be used for medical or mental health care for the employee or a family member, including care or services related to victimizations from domestic abuse, sexual assault, or stalking. He discussed employer requirements and enforcement by the Director of Metropolitan Health. City Clerk Vacek read the proposed paid sick leave ordinance in its entirety.
