SUBJECT: SA Tomorrow Sustainability Plan Briefing
SUMMARY:
A briefing to the City Council Comprehensive Plan Committee on the status of adopted policies and practices related to SA Tomorrow Sustainability Plan.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The SA Tomorrow Sustainability Plan is one of three growth-related plans of the City of San Antonio's SA Tomorrow Plans along with the Comprehensive Plan and Multimodal Transportation Plan, adopted by City Council August 11, 2016. The Sustainability Plan addresses how the City’s expected population growth will be balanced with our social, economic, and environmental resources while enhancing the community’s quality of life and building overall resilience. The Sustainability Plan articulates the City’s Sustainability strategy and serves as a roadmap to make our community and municipal operations more sustainable and can be viewed at <http://www.sasustainabilityplan.com>.
The Sustainability Plan identified 72 strategies across seven key areas with 23 indicators to track progress. The key areas include:
• Energy
• Food System
• Green Buildings & Infrastructure
• Land Use & Transportation
• Natural Resources
• Public Health
• Solid Waste Resources
The outcomes of the Sustainability Plan focus on the cross-cutting themes of air quality, economic vitality, equity, and resilience and water resources. Progress on the SA Tomorrow Sustainability Plan can be viewed on the SA Tomorrow Sustainability Dashboard at <https://www.sasustainability.com>.
On June 22, 2017, City Council passed a resolution in support of the Paris Climate Agreement, and the Mayor’s National Climate Action Agenda, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and explore the potential benefits and costs of adopting policies and programs that promote the long-term goal of greenhouse gas emissions reduction while maximizing economic and social co-benefits of such action.
On June 27, 2017, CPS Energy committed to providing $500,000.00 to the University of Texas at San Antonio to work with the City of San Antonio on the development of a Climate Action and Adaptation Plan as identified in the SA Tomorrow Sustainability Plan. The City is currently developing the Climate Action & Adaptation Plan, SA Climate Ready, which is projected to be completed by April 2019.

The Office of Sustainability will provide a briefing on the implementation of the SA Tomorrow Sustainability Plan and current project status and a summary of the following items:

• Implementation Progress
• Climate Action & Adaption Plan Overview
