Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center Expansion Project Update

SUMMARY:
This briefing provides an update on the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center Expansion and Transformation Project. This briefing will provide an update on the project status, schedule, and the upcoming major milestones through completion.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center (HBGCC) originally was constructed for HemisFair 68. It was expanded and renovated in 1974, 1977, 1986 and 1999. The 1999 expansion doubled the size of the Convention Center to 1.3 million gross square feet.

The construction of the $325 million Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center (HBGCC) Expansion Project started in July 2013, which includes 747,250 square feet expansion of the existing center that includes exhibit halls, multi-purpose room, ballroom, meeting rooms, administrative spaces, as well as a 138,300 square foot renovation of the existing space and 398,933 square feet of demolition of the original west building. Once fully constructed the Convention Center will be a total of 1.65 million square feet. The improvements are designated to reflect the culture of San Antonio and improve the Convention Center's competitive position.

PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION:
A previously executed contract with Hunt-Zachry, a Joint Venture, for the design and construction of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center Expansion Project in the amount of $325 million was approved by City Council on September 20, 2012 through Ordinance 2012-09-20-0711. Additionally, City Council approved Ordinance 2012-09-20-0712, authorizing the execution of a professional services agreement with Project Control of Texas, Inc. for on call Capital Program Staff Augmentation services.
