Briefing and discussion on the roles and responsibilities of the Commission
SUMMARY:
This item will include a staff briefing on housing issues in San Antonio and the roles and responsibilities of the Commission. The staff briefing will be followed by Commission discussion.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
On May 14, 2015 City Council approved a resolution accepting the Mayor’s Task Force on Preserving Dynamic and Diverse Neighborhoods Report and an ordinance establishing the San Antonio Housing Commission to Protect and Preserve Dynamic and Diverse Neighborhoods.
ISSUE:
The Housing Commission is an advisory board to City Council. The Commission is initially tasked with developing and implementing the five short-term and eight long-term recommendations included in the Task Force Report. The broader charge of the Commission is to be a coordinating body that makes recommendations to City Council on workforce/ affordable housing preservation and production as well as policies to minimize displacement and mitigate the effects of neighborhood change.
City staff in the Department of Planning and Community Development, Office of the City Attorney and other City departments will be available as resources to support the efforts of the Commission. In order to support its work, the Commission may also seek voluntary technical or specific professional assistance from individuals in the community representing certain technical disciplines or areas of special expertise.

Staff recommends that a briefing on roles and responsibilities be provided to the Commission.
