SUBJECT:

Acknowledging the resignation of District 10 Councilmember Carlton Soules



SUMMARY:

On Monday, December 9, 2013, Councilmember Carlton Soules submitted a written resignation to the Mayor and Council.

Beginning Thursday, January 2, 2014 through the close of business on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, the Office of the City Clerk will accept applications, letters of interest, resumes, and financial disclosure statements for the District 10 vacancy. Applications, letters of interest, resumes, and financial disclosure statements received from qualified residents of the district will be made available to the Mayor and Council. Applications, letters of interest, resumes, and financial disclosure statements are public information upon filing with the Office of the City Clerk.

On Wednesday, January 29, 2014, the City Council will convene in "B" Session to review the applications, letters of interest, resumes, and financial disclosure statements. At the Regular Council Meeting to be held on Thursday, January 30, 2014, the City Council will vote to fill the vacancy.

In accordance with Section 8 of the City Charter, the City will conduct a Special Election on Saturday, May 10, 2014 to fill the vacancy for the balance of the unexpired term of office ending on May 31, 2015.



BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The District 10 vacancy is being filled in accordance with the provisions outlined in Section 8 of the City Charter. The City Charter states that City Council may appoint a person to serve as a council member on a temporary basis during the period between the creation of the vacancy and the special election. Procedures for filling the vacancy are outlined in Ordinance 2010-05-06-0375.
