TXDOT Temporary Closure - Surclovia
SUMMARY:
An ordinance authorizing the execution of an agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) for the temporary street closure of State right-of-ways on Old Pearsall Road from Holm Road to Medina Base Road in connection with the Surclovia event hosted by City Council District 4.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Ciclovia, a Spanish term meaning "cycleway," is the closing of certain streets to automobiles for cyclists, pedestrians and other forms of physical activity. Ciclovia events are hosted throughout the United States, and around the world to encourage physical activity. Since 2011, S?clov?a events have been hosted in San Antonio on city streets in an effort to get people out and moving. In fact, the YMCA most recently hosted its thirteenth S?clov?a event on October 22, 2017 allowing bicyclists, skateboarders and pedestrians to move freely within the Broadway corridor.
City Council District 4 will host Surclovia, the first ever Southside ciclovia. The event will allow participants to move freely on Old Pearsall Road (from Holm Road to Medina Base Road) free of vehicular traffic. In addition, participants will be able to partake in activities held within Pearsall Park as part of the event. The Surclovia event will be on Sunday, November 19, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and will also include: bike riding; zumba; yoga; salsa dancing; wellness screenings; family games and face painting.
Authorization for a temporary street closure is required from TXDOT. Based on TXDOT's policy, authorization for temporary closures of State maintained roadways is formally granted by agreement, which must be executed between the governmental jurisdictions which will be impacted by the temporary street closures.
