SUBJECT:
An Ordinance authorizing the creation of a memorial designation of "Archbishop Patrick Flores Memorial Way" on a portion of W. Woodlawn Ave. between N. Zarzamora and Bandera Road.
SUMMARY:
On January 19, 2017, Councilman Cris Medina sponsored a Council Consideration Request (Exhibit "A") to add a Memorial Designation of "Archbishop Patrick Flores Memorial Way" on a portion of W. Woodlawn Ave., between N. Zarzamora and Bandera Road (Exhibit "B"). The request was initiated commemorate the life of Archbishop Patrick Flores, a leading local spiritual icon of the Catholic community and beyond denominational lines. This stretch of roadway is in the heart of District 7 and includes the home campus of the Archdiocese of San Antonio.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Archbishop Patrick Flores, served as Archbishop of the Archdiocese for 25 years. He was appointed chairman of the Texas State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights in 1979 and became the national chaplain for the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) later this same year. Further, in 1974, he was instrumental in the founding of C.O.P.S. (Communities Organized for Public Service); grassroots organization that helped individuals improve their neighborhoods. In 1980, he became a member of the Hispanic Caucus Committee, and in 1981 founded Catholic Television of San Antonio, the first diocesan television station in the United States.
