This item includes a staff briefing on the SA Corridors strategic framework plan


BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The SA Tomorrow Comprehensive Plan identified 13 "Regional Centers" and 12 "Primary Transit Corridors." Our key corridors are the connections between our City's regional centers and urban centers. The City's corridors must be multimodal in nature and be targeted for employment and housing opportunities where appropriate. Corridors must also provide safe access and mobility; serve as attractive gateways and also frame compact and walkable mixed use developments. According to studies done during the comprehensive planning process the areas surrounding the future transit corridor areas have the capacity to accommodate up to 50% of future housing growth. Through detailed analysis and public outreach the project will create a road map for how the city grows, using our transit system as a unifying feature.
In June 2016, the Planning Department, in partnership with VIA, started SA Corridors to take the initial steps in implementing SA Tomorrow and support VIA's Vision 2040 Long Range Plan. SA Corridors builds off of this previous work by developing a recommended future land use map and plan for the corridor areas which respects existing small area and neighborhood plans while helping to implement the community's goals expressed through SA Tomorrow. In addition to recommended future land use, the study evaluates the incentives and regulations currently in place are being evaluated for their ability to deliver transit-supportive development.
