SUBJECT:
City-Wide Streetlight Project Status
SUMMARY:
A briefing on the status of LED streetlight projects throughout the City.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The City’s current streetlight inventory consists of approximately 77,500 lights of all types including LED streetlights. These streetlights can be grouped into the following wattage/size categories:
• 100Watt (W) streetlights for residential neighborhoods;
• 250W streetlights for the City’s major thoroughfares; and,
• 400W streetlights for areas that require a high level of lighting, such as Downtown and expressways.
Since 2011, the City has been in the process of evaluating and implementing Light-Emitting-Diode (LED) technology for use in City streetlights. LED streetlight technology provides utility bill savings through reduced energy consumption, reduced maintenance costs and reduced fuel costs.
To date, the City has converted over 50% of its streetlights to LED. City staff will provide Council with a briefing that provides an overview of the history of City LED streetlight projects as well as upcoming projects.
