SUBJECT:
Acknowledging the Resignation of District 9 Councilmember Elisa Chan.
SUMMARY:
On Tuesday, October 8, 2013, Councilmember Elisa Chan informed the Mayor and Council that she was resigning effective Friday, October 18, 2013.
Beginning Monday, October 21, 2013 through Friday, November 1, 2013 close of business; the Office of the City Clerk will accept applications for the District 9 Vacancy. Applications received will be made available to the Mayor and Council. Applications, Letters of Interest, Resumes, and Financial Disclosure Statements are public information upon filing with the Office of the City Clerk.
On Wednesday, November 6, 2013; the City Council will convene in "B" Session to review the applications. At the Regular Council Meeting to be held on Thursday, November 7, 2013, the City Council will vote to fill the Vacancy.
In accordance with Section 8 of the City Charter, the City will conduct a Special Election on Saturday, May 10, 2014 to fill the Vacancy for the balance of the unexpired term of office ending on May 31, 2015.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The District 9 Vacancy is being filled in accordance with the provisions outlined in Section 8 of the City Charter. The City Charter states that Councilmember Vacancies shall be filled by a majority vote of the remaining members of Council. Procedures for filling the Vacancy are outlined in Ordinance 2010-05-06-0375.
As more than 270 days remain on the unexpired term of office, the City will also conduct a Special Election to fill the Vacancy ending May 31, 2015.
