SUBJECT:
Scheduling a special City Council meeting for Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.
SUMMARY:
This ordinance will formally schedule a special called City Council meeting for Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. to canvass election returns from the May 10, 2014 special City election to fill the vacancy in City Council District 9.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
In accordance with Section 11 of the City Charter, special Meetings of the City Council shall be called by the City Clerk.
ISSUE:
Section 67.003 of the Texas Election Code states that the time period for canvassing the Election Returns is between 8 days and 11 days after the date of the election. Wednesday, May 21, 2014 is the last day for the City Council, as the Canvassing Authority, to canvass the election returns of the May 10, 2014 special election.
Due to the waiting period mandated by the Texas Election Code, counting of over-seas ballots, mail-in ballots, and provisional ballots prevent the City of San Antonio canvassing on an earlier date.
ALTERNATIVES:
No alternatives are available as May 21, 2014 is the last day for the City Council to canvass the election returns.

The Office of the City Clerk is requesting approval of the Ordinance to schedule a special City Council meeting.
