SUBJECT:

Application and Acceptance of Texas Commission on the Arts grant


SUMMARY:

This ordinance authorizes the submission of a grant application and acceptance of funds for grant assistance being provided through the Texas Commission on the Arts. These funds are being pursued in support of programming for the 2014 Mayor's Summer Reading Club at San Antonio Public Library branches across the City in an amount not to exceed $1,925 for the period June 1, 2014 to August 30, 2014.


BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The 2014 Mayor's Summer Reading Club centers on science using the theme "Fizz, Boom, Read!" In conjunction with the Reading Club, the San Antonio Public Library will hire program presenters who will engage children's interest, promote science topics and encourage summer reading. J. Lucas Miller, the Singing Biologist, is one such presenter who will be funded through this grant.

Mr. Miller is on the Texas Commission on the Arts performance roster. As such, the Commission can provide 30 to 50% of the funding necessary to bring Mr. Lucas to San Antonio Public Library locations. Mr. Miller has agreed to present 15 programs at a cost of $255 per show for a total of $3825.


ISSUE:

Funds awarded by the Texas Commission on the Arts will offset the expense of Mr. Miller's performances and bring an engaging, science-themed performance to approximately 1200 children in San Antonio.


ALTERNATIVES:

If application and acceptance of this grant is not awarded, the San Antonio Public Library will continue to seek appropriate sources of funding for Summer Reading programming
