SUBJECT:

A Briefing on the Terminal A Renovations Project

SUMMARY:

This is a briefing on the Terminal A Renovations project at the San Antonio International Airport. The first phase of the project is expected to be complete by May 31, 2014.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Terminal A is a 30-year old facility that houses two-thirds of the passengers at the San Antonio International Airport. As part of the on-going improvement program at the Airport, the Terminal A Renovations project was initiated in 2011 to provide a comprehensive modernization of the facility, including new infrastructure and finishes.

In 2012, construction began on the first phase of the project. The $35-million phase includes finish materials similar to those used in Terminal B. New and updated fixtures, wall and column coverings as well as upgraded lighting were installed, creating a common theme throughout the airport complex. The 12 restroom facilities were enlarged and renovated into modern spaces.

The existing metal ceiling base was reused and ceiling panels were renewed by applying an environmentally friendly coating, resulting in a bright surface thus enhancing the light quality of the space and reducing the cost associated with artificial lighting. Floor coverings include a new terrazzo overlay as well as carpet that is manufactured using products containing 64-75% total recycled content, including 32-35% post-consumer content.

Phase two of the project includes the design and renovation of the customs facility and improvements to the barrel ceiling in the ticketing area. Other improvements are being considered for phase two and future phases.

ISSUE:

The first phase of the Terminal A Renovations will be completed on May 31, 2014. The briefing will allow Staff to provide the City Council with an update on the project.
