Submission of Grant Application for Senior Programs
SUMMARY:
This ordinance approves submission of grant applications to Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) for the Senior Nutrition Program in an amount up to $1,400,000.00 and the Transportation Program in an amount up to $300,000.00 for services for FY 2015 through FY 2016.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The City of San Antonio Department of Human Services provides congregate meals and transportation services to seniors 60 and over living in San Antonio and Bexar County. These programs are funded with General Funds and Federal grants, awarded since 1973, by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services through AACOG.
The City's Senior Nutrition Program serves approximately 2,800 meals daily, Monday through Friday, at the City's Senior Center sites located throughout the community. The City partners with various community agencies to augment City operated senior center locations to provide greater access to senior nutrition services. The Transportation program provides essential door-to-door services to and from the City's Senior Centers. The program provides approximately 72,000 one-way trips annually.
For FY 2014, AACOG awarded grant funds in the amount of $1,626,258.00 for Congregate Nutrition and $138,500.00 for Supportive Services (senior transportation). A ten percent cash match is required for each grant award. FY 2014, the City provided $3,598,511.00 in matching funds to support senior programming. Since at least 1983, the City has overmatched grant funds in order to ensure community access to nutrition services.
