Briefing and discussion of the City Council recommendations of nominees to the Citizen Planning Institute.


SUMMARY:

A briefing and discussion to review the City Council recommendations for nominees to the Citizen Planning Institute.


BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The purpose of the proposed Citizen Planning Institute is to educate citizens about the role good planning and implementation play in helping to create communities of lasting value. Citizen Planners are individuals interested in playing a more informed and active role in shaping the future of their communities and in building the knowledge-base of their neighborhood organizations. The Citizen Planning Institute should be designed to help aspiring Citizen Planners:

? Identify community assets, assess needs, and shape positive neighborhood change
? Understand the history of planning in San Antonio and purposes of a Comprehensive Plan
? Understand the current planning initiatives underway in San Antonio
? Understand how zoning code reform will improve the process and quality of development projects
? Identify tools to protect a community's unique assets and promote good development
? Understand how planning will improve the likelihood that quality of life neighborhood improvements will get implemented

On September 11, 2014, District 8 Councilman Ron Nirenberg, as chair of the City Council Comprehensive Planning Committee, made a request that each council member nominate two residents of their district to comprise the initial class of the Citizen Planning Institute.


ISSUE:

This item will allow a review of the City Council appointments to the CPI. A total of 16 names have been submitted, representing 8 of the 10 City Council Districts. Each appointee resides in the City of San Antonio.
