DEPARTMENT: Police
DEPARTMENT HEAD: Anthony L. Trevi?o, Jr.
COUNCIL DISTRICTS IMPACTED: Citywide
SUBJECT:
Police Departments' Vacancies and Manpower Planning
SUMMARY:
At the request of the Public Safety Committee, the following is a status briefing on the number of sworn officers in for the San Antonio Police Department, San Antonio Park Police, and San Antonio Airport Police, and plans to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
In accordance with the Adopted FY2015 budget and the November 2014 budget amendment, the San Antonio Police Department is required to maintain a vacancy level of 75 sworn positions during the current fiscal year. Currently, the Department has exceeded that number. As a result, SAPD is taking immediate steps to maintain adequate patrol coverage across the City. The Department will begin a new cadet class in March 2015 consisting of approximately 30 cadets. Once they have graduated, these officers are anticipated to be ready for patrol assignments one year from the commencement of the class. The Police Department has coordinated with the Office of Management and Budget and there are sufficient funds within the FY15 departmental budget to cover the March academy class.
Additionally, the Department will reassign patrol officers, who had been assigned to other non-patrol units, back onto full time patrol duty. These officers will help cover the positions of the officers expected to retire between now and the end of the fiscal year.
The following table shows table shows authorized positions, current vacancy levels, and the expected timing current cadets will be available to start patrol assignments.
