SUMMARY:
 
This briefing will provide information on the Citizen Planning Institute (CPI) schedule and curriculum.
 
 
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
 
The focus of the CPI will be to educate citizens on good planning and how plan implementation  help create communities of lasting value. The objective of the CPI is to build a constituency for good planning.  Participants in the initial program  were selected by the Mayor and City Council.  Participants will be able to have a more informed and active role in shaping the future of their communities and in building the knowledge base of their neighborhood organizations.
 
 
ISSUE:
 
The CPI curriculum is designed to teach aspiring Citizen Planners:
·      Understand the Comprehensive Plan and the elements of urban planning
·      How planning shapes cities
·      Planning for sustainability and the environment
·      Civic engagement and the role they can play in the SA Tomorrow initiative
 
The first meeting of the CPI will be held in mid-June.  This meeting will provid  an introduction to Urban Planning, the purpose of a Comprehensive Plan, and a review of best practices in urban planning.
