SUBJECT:

Naming of the Baseball Field at Pittman-Sullivan Park to Charles B. Shannon Memorial Stadium


SUMMARY:

This ordinance authorizes the naming of the baseball field at Pittman-Sullivan Park to Charles B. Shannon Memorial Stadium located in Council District 2.


BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Anthony C. Edwards, Sr., submitted the request to name the baseball field at Pittman-Sullivan Park to Charles B. Shannon Stadium located at 1101 Iowa. Indicating that the naming would commemorate and recognize his invaluable contributions to the community. This would, "allow for generations to come, and stories to be told, of this great man's love for humanity and family."

Charles B. Shannon was a special person with a unique gift for public service. In 1970, he entered the United States Navy and served on the USS Constellation and had a tour of duty in Vietnam. Mr. Shannon was Honorably Discharged in 1973.

He was an avid baseball fan and played the sport as a youngster and coached an adult team from 1974 through 1988. Mr. Shannon was the Executive Director of the Alamo Branch YMCA from 1982 to 2001. In 2001, he was promoted to District Director over the Southern Region that covered Davis-Scott, Southwestern Bell and the Westside YMCA's. In his more than 21 years with the YMCA, Mr. Shannon raised more than $5 million that provided for an abundance of programming opportunities for inner-city youth. Through his leadership, he took the Davis-Scott YMCA to be one of the top inner city YMCA's serving minorities in America.

Charles B. Shannon passed away unexpectedly on February 9, 2003, at the age of 55. There is a baseball field at Pittman Sullivan park that is unnamed. Naming the baseball field after Charles B. Shannon will honor and recognize his invaluable contributions to the community.
