Discussion and possible action on a recommendation to the Board of Directors regarding a memorandum of understanding between the City of San Antonio, Edgewood Independent School District, Alamo Colleges and the Westside Development Corporation for capital improvements at the Westside Education and Training Center.
SUMMARY:
The Westside Development Corporation, along with the City of San Antonio, Edgewood Independent School District and the Alamo Colleges, has been negotiating, for nearly twelve months, terms of a memorandum of understanding for capital improvements at the Westside Education and Training Center, which is located at SW 40th Street and Old Highway 90. Staff will present a final draft version for consideration by the Board of Directors.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
General
The Westside Development Corporation has been in long-term discussions with the Alamo Colleges about how to improve and expand workforce training programs at the Westside Education and Training Center. It was agreed that improvements to the current campus - the former Lincoln Elementary School - are necessary to maximize the full use of the current space, which lacks necessary ADA accommodations; thus preventing the use of second floor classrooms. In addition, new construction on the site will expand programming to meet the demand from employers for a skilled local workforce.
A request to Councilman Ray Lopez for assistance in securing funds for those immediate improvements resulted in a $500,000 allocation in the fiscal year 2015 budget to the WDC. The approval of this memorandum of agreement will meet one of the required conditions to receive the funds.
The agreement addresses several key components of the site, including, but not limited to:
