Acceptance of Supplemental Senior Nutrition Program Funding

SUMMARY:

This ordinance authorizes the acceptance of supplemental funds in the amount of $301,698.00 awarded by Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) and approves a budget revision for the FY 2015 Senior Nutrition Program for the provision of congregate meals for seniors residing in the Bexar County Area Agency on Aging service area for the period October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The City's Senior Nutrition Program (SNP) provides seniors, ages 60 and older, with a meal and nutritional information in a congregate setting at 63 centers. The Department of Human Services (DHS) operates the program using General and federal Funds from the U.S. Department of Health and human Services (HHS) awarded through grants from the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services through AACOG. The City has received Federal Funds from AACOG since 1973.

The program serves approximately 2,900 meals daily, Monday through Friday, at the City's Senior Center sites located throughout the community. Authorization of this ordinance will allow Federal Funds to support an additional 48,977 meals for seniors residing in the Bexar County Area Agency on Aging service area.

The overall SNP budget, including funds proposed to be accepted in this ordinance, is $5,932,799.00 of which 39% is funded through the SNP grant and 61% through General Fund.
