SUBJECT:
City Council Project Fund Allocations
SUMMARY:
This ordinance awards grant allocations through the City Council Project Funds Program to support the following projects:
A.) The Mayor’s Summer Reading Program through the San Antonio Public Library Foundation
B.) Learn & Play Passes for the Doseum (formerly San Antonio Children’s Museum)
C.) Hidden Forest Elementary Track Project
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The City Council Project Funds program was transferred to the Office of the City Council for administration in 2012. During this transfer several improvements to the program were made, including; implementation of a streamlined application (online), an election year moratorium, and City Council approval for allocations exceeding $10,000 to an applicant for the same program, activity, events, good or service. This ordinance awards City Council Project Funds allocations to support the following:
A.) This ordinance awards a grant allocation to support the Mayor’s Summer Reading Program in an amount not to exceed $11,318.18. Every year, the San Antonio Public Library Foundation hosts this program throughout the City’s 26 branches to promote literacy. In addition to programs and events, children and teens are encouraged to read at least 15 books over the summer and receive a certificate signed by the Mayor and free book. In 2014, the program served more than 30,000 youth, hosted nearly 2,000 programs and distributed more than 10,000 books as incentives. The projection is even higher for 2015, so a grant allocation will support printing costs and the purchase of books.
B.) This ordinance awards a grant allocation to support The Doseum (formerly San Antonio Children’s Museum) in the amount of $10,900.00. On June 6, 2015, The Doseum held the grand opening for its 95,000 square-foot (indoor/outdoor), state of the art children’s museum in the heart of the Broadway Cultural Corridor. That day alone served more than 25,000 people, but the grant allocations will help provide free admissions for school groups, as well as camp program scholarships for eligible families.
C.) This awards a grant allocation to support the Hidden Forest Elementary Track Project in the amount of $13,750.00. This project would provide additional topsoil and a newly grassed area, additional sod along the track length, and additional irrigation for watering these newly developed areas. This project greatly improves a public park benefitting the entire community, giving a safe environment for residents of all ages to utilize.
