Background Information:

As the result of the City of San Antonio’s 2012-2017 Bond Program, a new fire station located in District 2 has been established. On April 2, 2015 PASA completed the process to update new additions to the public art pre-qualified roster. In February PASA established an artist selection panel of five panelists: Carl Wedige, Deputy Chief San Antonio Fire Department; Akeem Brown, District 2 Council Office representative; Ethel Shipton, District 2 artist; Nettie Hinton, San Antonio Arts Commission; and Jessica Sanchez, San Antonio Arts Commission. The artist selection panel met to review artist qualifications, evaluate and score a shortlist of artists, review and discuss finalists, and recommended artist Cathy Cunningham-Little on May 29, 2015. Cathy Cunningham-Little specializes in treated glass, reflective surfaces, and multiple lighting types and applications.

The San Antonio Arts Commission: Public Art Committee approved pre-qualified artist, Cathy-Cunningham Little, on June 6, 2015. The San Antonio Arts Commission approved pre-qualified artist, Cathy-Cunningham-Little, on June 16, 2015.

Issue:

Approval of conceptual design will allow artist to move forward into schematic and final design.

Alternatives:

Should conceptual design not be approved, the artist will be asked to bring back conceptual design to the Public Art Committee for review.

Fiscal Impact:

The public art opportunity for the District 2 Fire Station 18 was approved by City Council and is funded through the one percent for public art allocation as part of the 2012-2017 Bond Program, Proposition 5: Public Safety in the amount of $142,000. No additional funds will be encumbered.
