SUBJECT: Ribbon-cutting for Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center Expansion & Art Program

ACTION TYPE: Briefing

SUMMARY:
This item is to brief the Public Art Committee on the ribbon-cutting event for the newly expanded Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, which includes the installation of two monumental public artworks. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at 3:00.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The public art program for the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center (HBGCC) expansion project is one of the largest in the city's history and features iconic artworks. The art program for the expansion features monumentally scaled artworks including site-specific installations and large scale murals. As part of the expansion several existing artworks from the HBGCC art collection will be relocated and adapted within the new facility. Jason Bruges Studio of London/New York created a 30 foot tall interactive light-based sculpture entitled "Liquid Crystal" for the North Entry atrium lobby of the convention center. The sculpture is in the shape of a massive tower sheathed with an undulating series of LCD panels that reflect light to varying degrees, creating a shimmering waterfall effect. The light effects will fluctuate in reaction to activity in the lobby. The eastern fa?ade of the convention center is the site of a large-scale outdoor wall mural installation by internationally renowned artist Christian Moeller. The exterior artwork will be visible to thousands of commuters each day as they drive along Interstate 37. The mural features a giant pixilated image of an endless field of native cactus. The wall mural installation will stand 13' tall and 913' in length, stretching over the entire expanse of the east fa?ade and part of the north facade of the building.
