Subject: Broadway Cultural Corridor Public Art Project

ACTION tYPE: Artist Selection Panel Appointment

Summary:

This item is to approve an artist selection panel for the 2012 Bond Program’s public art opportunity for the Broadway Cultural Corridor. The proposed selection panel is: Marise McDermott (Witte Museum), Orlando Bolanos (The DoSeum), Bob Brackman (San Antonio Botanical Garden), Lynn Bobbit (Brackenridge Park Conservancy) and Rene Barilleaux (San Antonio Arts Commission).

Background Information:

As the result of the City of San Antonio’s 2012-2017 Bond Program, the Broadway Cultural Corridor impacting District 1, 2 and 10 has been identified as a public art opportunity. Several cultural corridor institutions were identified within the 2012-2017 Bond propositions, including the Witte Museum, The DoSeum, Brackenridge Park Conservancy and the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. These institutions are represented as part of the proposed selection panel and have been consulted in project development for this public art opportunity.

Issue:

The approval of panelists will authorize an artist selection process that will recommend a qualified artist to the San Antonio Arts Commission. If approved, panelists will be added to the Public Art San Antonio panelist pool.

Alternatives:

The appointment of selection panelists is in accordance with adopted policies and guidelines. If the Public Art Committee does not appoint a selection panel the project will be delayed impacting the delivery of the 2012-2017 Bond Program’s public art plan.

Fiscal Impact:

N/A

Recommendation:

Staff recommends approval of the proposed artist selection panel as presented in adherence with Public Art Policy & Guidelines Section 7(b) Selection Panel Composition and Procedures.
