SUBJECT: Broadway Cultural Corridor Public Art Project

ACTION TYPE: Artist Selection

SUMMARY:
This item is to approve the artist recommendation for 2012-2017 Bond project for the Broadway Cultural Corridor. Artist recommendation: pre-qualified artist Buster Simpson and landscape architect Larry Clark.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
As the result of the City of San Antonio's 2012-2017 Bond Program, the Broadway Cultural Corridor impacting District 1, 2 and 10 has been identified as a public art opportunity. Several cultural corridor institutions were identified within the 2012-2017 Bond propositions, including the Witte Museum, The DoSeum, Brackenridge Park Conservancy and the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. These institutions are represented as part of the proposed selection panel and have been consulted in project development for this public art opportunity.

In January 2016 PASA established an artist selection panel of five panelists: Marise McDermott (Witte Museum), Orlando Bolanos (The DoSeum), Bob Brackman (San Antonio Botanical Garden), Lynn Bobbit (Brackenridge Park Conservancy) and Rene Barilleaux (San Antonio Arts Commission). On January 20, 2016 the artist selection panel convened and recommended pre-qualified artist Buster Simpson and landscape architect Larry Clark for the Broadway Cultural Corridor public art opportunity.

Buster Simpson nationally-recognized public artist based out of Seattle, Washington. Simpson is recognized for his impact on environmental, sustainable public art projects, master planning background and experience working in with transit for the past 30+ years.
