Head Start Program and Fiscal Briefing
SUMMARY:
This item provides a briefing on Head Start and Early Head Start program and fiscal activities and shares information regarding an upcoming Comprehensive Services and School Readiness Federal Review planned for the week of February 22, 2016. In preparation, this item also provides an overview of the federal review process, including the role of governing body members.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The City's Head Start and Early Head Start programs are funded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Head start (HHS). The programs provide early education, family support, and comprehensive support services to 3,236 eligible children between the ages of six weeks and five years, and their families in the Edgewood and San Antonio Independent School Districts.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services requires that recipients of Head Start Grants provide regular briefings on program and fiscal activities and ongoing training throughout the program year to their governing bodies. The City's Economic and Human Development Committee (EHDC) and the Head Start Policy Council provide governance oversight for the City of San Antonio, Department of Human Services Head Start and Early Head Start programs.

This item provides a briefing on Head Start and Early Head Start program and fiscal activities. This report includes an overview of enrollment, meals, family and community support, health, education, and fiscal indicators for the month of December 2015.
