Subject: Sculpture Trail (Alamo to Briscoe)

ACTION tYPE: Concept Approval

Summary:

This item is to consider approval of a concept to create a sculpture trail between the Alamo and the Briscoe Western Art Museum featuring historical figures of significance to San Antonio.

Background Information:

The City accepted a donation of seventeen bronze statues depicting historical and heroic Texans from Sea World of Texas in 2001. The statues were professionally restored and placed at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. A proposal by Jack Guenther, board member of the Briscoe Western Art Museum, envisions a sculpture trail consisting of thirteen sculptures placed between the Alamo and the Briscoe Museum, including six sculptures from the City’s art inventory (of those donated by Sea World) and seven new commissions to be donated to the City. Artworks will be funded through private donations and subject to an artwork donation agreement.

A placement strategy will identify sculpture locations and provide historic context. Artworks will be installed as part of Tricentennial celebrations.

Issue:

The approval of the concept will allow the applicant to continue developing the Sculpture Trail project and the process for stakeholder review and input. A placement strategy will be developed and brought back to the committee for consideration and final approval.

Alternatives:

Should the concept not be approved, the project will address the comments and suggestions of the committee in order to consider alternatives and potential consideration at a future agenda.

Fiscal Impact:

This project will be funded by private donations, inclusive of a maintenance endowment.

Recommendation:

Staff recommends approval of the concept.
