DIVISION: Public Art

MANAGER: Jimmy LeFlore

COUNCIL DISTRICT IMPACT(S): Citywide

SUBJECT: Oversight of Tricentennial Public Art Process

ACTION TYPE: Committee Appointments

SUMMARY:
This item is to designate individuals to serve as Tricentennial Commission representatives to participate with the San Antonio Arts Commission (SAAC) Public Art Committee.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
On August 13, 2015, the Mayor and City Council established the San Antonio Tricentennial Celebration Commission, a public, nonprofit local government corporation consisting of 19 individuals appointed by the Mayor and City Council and Bexar County. The Tricentennial Commission recognizes the unique role of public art in celebrating and honoring the 300th anniversary of the city's founding. The commission began forming a Public Art Legacy Committee that would help plan and advise on public art efforts leading up to the Tricentennial. To strengthen the connectivity and communication on public art efforts with the City's public art program and the SAAC's Public Art Committee, a strategy is proposed to consolidate efforts by including special Tricentennial appointments to join the SAAC Public Art Committee and to include Tricentennial updates as part of their regular meetings.

ISSUE:
The City of San Antonio adopted bylaws and established the San Antonio Arts Commission on April 2, 2015, which set forth roles and responsibilities of Standing Committees, including the Public Art Committee. No changes are being proposed to modify the April 2, 2015 established bylaws at this time; however, this proposal acknowledges the addition of up to four (4) non-commissioner advisors to the Public Art Committee for matters concerning Tricentennial public art planning and coordination. DCCD staff will assist the Tricentennial Commission with the nomination process, which will be reviewed by the SAAC Executive Committee.

ALTERNATIVES:
The SAAC can choose to disregard the proposal...
