Project Background
The approved 2012-2017 Bond Program included $1.2 million for Brackenridge Park improvements. The project description specifically highlighted the rehabilitation of basic park infrastructure to included improvements along the N. St. Mary's Street corridor.
The remaining balance of the Bond Program funds approved by voters will be used for this Project for design services, environmental services, advertising, and project management. Any remaining funds thereafter are to be realized as bond savings. The base bid provides for the complete rehabilitation of two existing historic restroom buildings on St. Mary's Street within the park to meet ADA requirements. Selected alternates include repairs to historic features including three faux-bois sculptures and park entry monuments. The faux-bois, or "false wood" sculptures are made out of concrete and steel, typically with functional uses such as benches, picnic tables or bridges. They are the works of Artisan, Dionicio Rodriguez, who sculpted several of these faux-bois pieces for the park in the 1930's and 1940's. The Koehler monument gates on St. Mary's Street as well as stone entry monuments at some of the park entrances along Broadway will be restored and preserved from further deterioration. Both the sculptures and monument features have come to enhance the historic significance of Brackenridge Park and are considered important amenities to the park itself.
