2016 Uniform Crime Report and Crime Reduction Initiatives Update


SUMMARY:
The Uniform Crime Report (UCR), which is published by the Federal Bureau of Investigation annually, is comprised of monthly violent crime and property crime statistics reported by over 18,000 law enforcement agencies across the nation, including the San Antonio Police Department. 2016 UCR crime data for the City of San Antonio is current through August.

Through August 2016, there have been a total of 7,071 violent crimes reported in San Antonio. As in all major U.S. cities, San Antonio has experienced an increase in violent crime this year. It is important to note that while the FBI, and major law enforcement organizations such as the Major Cities Chiefs Association, have been unable to identify the factors which have contributed to the national crime increase, in San Antonio the increase can generally be attributed to an increase in high-risk, illegal behavior.

The San Antonio Police Department remains committed to working closely with residents and neighborhood organizations to address the issues may influence criminal activity and to reduce crime through various community policing efforts. In recent weeks, the City Council has approved programs and initiatives, such as the Drug Market Intervention Initiative and the Texas Anti-Gang Program, which are designed to enhance the SAPD's ability to coordinate and implement strategies to reduce the presence of drugs and other criminal activity within our communities wor...
