Debriefing from the 2016 Mayor’s Housing Summit
SUMMARY:
This item will include a summary discussion from the Mayor’s Housing Summit held on September 30, 2016 as well as a call for interest in planning the 2017 Housing Summit
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The Mayor’s Task Force on Preserving Dynamic and Diverse Neighborhoods recommended in its May 14, 2015 Report that an annual housing summit be held to “establish a unified housing policy and to support current housing planning and community development efforts to create safe, stable, mixed-income neighborhoods throughout the City.”
The first of these summits was the 2015 San Antonio Housing Policy Summit hosted by Mayor Ivy Taylor on May 15, 2015. The program included a charge from the Mayor to create comprehensive policies that support development and preservation of stable, mixed-income communities. Also included in the Summit were a Best Practices Panel, Keynote Luncheon, and Work Sessions.
The Housing Commission to Protect & Preserve Dynamic and Diverse Neighborhoods included assisting with developing the annual housing summit in its FY 2016 Work Plan and is tentatively included in its FY 2017 Draft Work Plan as well.
ISSUE:
The 2016 Mayor’s Housing Summit was held on Friday, September 30, 2016 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The Summit covered five topic areas: Finances and Funding; Homelessness; Innovation; Policy and Planning; and the Housing Commission Update. It included a morning Housing Overview, a Keynote Luncheon, three sets of breakout sessions, an afternoon reception, and a Neighborhood Open House.
A Housing Commission Update was structured as a breakout session offered during each of the session time slots (10:00 a.m., 1:15 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.) and led by the Housing Commission Chair. The Update offered Summit attendees an opportunity to learn more about the work that has been completed and scheduled to be completed by the Housing Commission since its establishment in 2015. Housing Commission members Natalie Griffith, Gil Piette, Rod Radle, Jim Bailey, and Richard Milk assisted Jennifer Gonzalez in facilitating the breakout sessions.
A total of 360 people attended the Housing Summit, including those who attended only portions of the full-day event. Of those, 54 attended one of the three Housing Commission Update breakout sessions.
A post-event survey currently is being conducted by staff in order to improve the summit for future years and results will be compiled in a report in November 2016.
