SUBJECT: Council Consideration Request on Permanent Stage 1 Water Restrictions
SUMMARY: SAWS staff will provide a briefing on the Council Consideration Request made by Councilman Nirenberg regarding Permanent Stage 1 Water Restrictions.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
In August 2015, Councilman Nirenberg filed a Council Consideration Request calling to declare Stage 1 water restrictions, defined in Chapter 34 of the Municipal Code, year round practice under normal conditions. Stage 1 water restrictions limits the use of irrigation or sprinkler systems to once per week and is triggered when the aquifer level at J-17 drops to six hundred sixty (660) feet msl based on a ten-day rolling average calculated and determined by the Edwards Aquifer Authority the SAWS. San Antonio Municipal Code Chapter 34 gives City Council authority to declare additional restrictions for water use.
On Tuesday, November 1, SAWS staff provided a briefing to their Board of Trustees on water use patterns, conservation initiatives, and watering restrictions. SAWS will provide a briefing to the Technology, Transportation, and Utilities Committee on November 9, 2016 regarding potential permanent stage 1 water restrictions.
