SUBJECT:
Renaming of the West End Park Pavilion located at the Frank Garrett Multi-Service Center

SUMMARY:
This ordinance approves the renaming of the West End Park Pavilion located at the Frank Garrett Multi-Service Center to the "Verna Mae 'Mama' Boone Pavilion".

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The West End Park Pavilion is an outdoor amenity located outside of the Frank Garrett Multi-Service Center, at 1226 NW 18th St., San Antonio, TX 78207. The pavilion is adjacent and attached to the West End Park Senior Center, which provides wrap-around services to seniors focusing on health and wellness, nutrition, education, recreation and social activities. Since its development, the West End Park Pavilion has been an integral part of the West End Park facilities and is enjoyed by the entire community daily.

Consistent with the City Code regulating the renaming of City facilities, the proposed name was sent forward to the City Clerk and considered by the convened Naming Committee at a Public Hearing on October 18, 2016.

The Naming Committee consisted of Melody Woosley, Department of Human Services Director, and Shawn Price, District 1 Community Representative.

The Committee approved the proposed rename and recommended "Verna Mae 'Mama' Boone Pavilion" be forwarded to the City Council for consideration and approval. The rename is recommended as Verna Mae "Mama" Boone was a longtime Council District 1 resident and an advocate for the homeless, seniors, and social community needs. She served as the founder of the non-profit Body of Christ Community Ministries. Through this organization, she led a group of volunteers to provide meals and clothing for those in need.

ISSUE:
The renaming of City facilities must go through a process set out in the City Code which includes final approval by City Council.
