SUMMARY:
Transportation & Capital Improvements (TCI) will provide a briefing on the status of the Alamodome Renovations, Convention Center Expansion and 2012 Bond Program including the City of San Antonio’s 5-Year Diversity Action Plan.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Alamodome Renovations
In November 2014, the NCAA selected the City of San Antonio to host the NCAA Men’s Final Four in March 2018 at the Alamodome. A contributing factor of the City winning the bid relied on the integrated nature of the Alamodome and Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center along with the City’s commitment to have the Alamodome’s renovations completed by by March, 2018.
The Project includes the demolition and expansion of the Alamodome’s north plaza, expansion of the concourses at plaza level on the east and west sides of the facility, renovation of a locker room and IT upgrades, to include scoreboards, ribbon boards and an associated control room. Construction schedule and activities have been coordinated to work around the daily Alamodome operations with both planned and future events taking place in the facility.
On January 12, 2017, City Council authorized an amendment in the amount of $700,000.00 for energy efficiency improvements to the Alamodome lighting. A 2012 feasibility study on the Alamodome facility identified lighting to be a priority item in building upgrades in anticipation of the City hosting the 2018 NCAA Final Four Event. The study recommended upgrading the existing lighting to meet the NCAA’s lighting requirements by using a combination of both the metal halide fixtures and LED sports lighting fixtures.
Project design for the Alamodome Renovations is complete. Construction began in January of 2016 with overall substantial completion scheduled on or before November 1, 2017.
Convention Center Expansion
The Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center (HBGCC) originally was constructed for HemisFair 1968. It was expanded and renovated in 1974, 1977, 1986 and 1999. The 1999 expansion doubled the size of the Convention Center to 1.3 million gross square feet.
The expansion and renovation of the $325 million Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center (HBGCC) started in July 2013. The HBGCC East Expansion included an increase in prime contiguous exhibit hall space from 426,000 square feet to over 514,000 square feet, including a new 54,000 square foot grand ballroom (the largest in Texas), an 87,000 sq., “column free” exhibit hall, administrative spaces, expanded kitchen, and indoor and outdoor cafés, and eastside loading docks. The demolition of the HBGCC West Wing began in March, 2016. The East Expansion and West Wing demolition was completed in July, 2016- four months ahead of schedule. The project is on track to be substantially complete on February 24, 2017. Once fully constructed, the HBGCC will encompass a total of 1.65 million square feet.

City of San Antonio’s 5-Year Diversity Action Plan
The City of San Antonio adopted a 5-Year Diversity Action Plan (Plan) in January of 2013. The Plan was designed to increase the participation of Small, Women and Minority-owned Businesses (SWMBEs) on construction and professional service contracts. One component of the Plan was the Management and Technical Assistance Program (MTAP) that was developed to provide advanced one-on-one business assistance and to help build capacity of SWMBEs who were attempting to procure or currently performing work for the City of San Antonio in the construction arena.
