SUBJECT:

2017-18 Academic Calendar

SUMMARY:

This includes approval of the Pre-K 4 SA 2017-18 academic calendar.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The current 2016-17 Pre-K 4 SA academic calendar aligns with the calendar most widely used by participating independent school districts.

ISSUE:

Pre-K 4 SA is proposing an academic calendar for the 2017-18 school year. School district calendars vary for this academic year and do not follow one specific schedule. Pre-K 4 SA reevaluated the calendar to revise student holidays and include a phase-in period for students in August.

The new calendar includes 177 instructional days. This number of days satisfies the required number of minutes (75,600 annually) outlined by TEA. The school year will begin on Monday, August 28. Most partnering districts also begin on this day, but some begin a week prior. The first day of school will follow a half-day phase-in period which will allow students to be introduced and acclimated to the teacher/school/classroom through a smaller, more intentional approach.

The school year will extend longer than most partner districts, with an end date of Friday, June 8. The additional day allows for a teacher workday at winter break and ensures all other student holidays remain as is. The calendar break includes an 11-day winter break, extending the previous winter breaks by one day.

ALTERNATIVES:

Pre-K 4 SA would revise the calendar.
