SUBJECT:

Fitness Equipment


SUMMARY:

An ordinance accepting the offer from Fitness In Motion for the purchase and delivery of fitness equipment for various fire facilities for the San Antonio Fire Department. Funding in the amount of $274,956.52 is available from the General Fund.


BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Submitted for City Council consideration and action is the offer submitted by Fitness In Motion, utilizing the BuyBoard cooperative contract #502-16 to provide the San Antonio Fire Department with the purchase and delivery of fitness equipment for various fire facilities for a total cost of $274,956.52.

The new equipment will replace outdated and damaged or broken equipment at 40 fire facilities throughout the City. This contract will provide the purchase and delivery of 17 elliptical machines, 31 treadmills and various other fitness and strength training equipment.

This purchase is made through the BuyBoard cooperative contract number #502-16, as authorized under Texas Local Government Code 271.103, which satisfies the legal requirement to seek competitive bids.

The equipment from Fitness In Motion will be covered by a standard 5 year parts and labor warranty.


ISSUE:

To better prepare the first responders for the daily physical demands of their job duties, SAFD has provided each fire facility with fitness equipment for employees to exercise while on duty. Over the last five years, SAFD has seen that participation in physical activity, or prehabilitation, not only reduced the number and severity of injuries, but also reduced the costs associated with on-duty injuries in terms of workers compensation claims, overtime, backfill and high-class pay.

The fitness equipment that was originally purchased in 2011 has reached the end of its useable life and is in need of replacement.
