SUBJECT:

Briefing and Commission discussion on the 2017 Mayor's Housing Summit to be held in May 2017

SUMMARY:

This item will include a briefing on the upcoming 2017 Mayor's Housing Summit and planning discussion regarding Commission-led Summit events/sessions.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The Mayor's Task Force on Preserving Dynamic and Diverse Neighborhoods recommended in its May 14, 2015 Report that an annual housing summit be held to "establish a unified housing policy and to support current housing planning and community development efforts to create safe, stable, mixed-income neighborhoods throughout the City."

The first of these summits was the 2015 San Antonio Housing Policy Summit hosted by Mayor Ivy Taylor on May 15, 2015. The program included a charge from the Mayor to create comprehensive policies that support development and preservation of stable, mixed-income communities. Also included in the Summit were a Best Practices Panel, Keynote Luncheon, and Work Sessions.

The Housing Commission to Protect & Preserve Dynamic and Diverse Neighborhoods assisted with the annual housing summit on September 30, 2016 by offering a Housing Commission Update during each of the three breakout sessions as well as by its members volunteering on various Summit subcommittees. The 2017 Mayor's Housing Summit is included in the Commission's FY 2017 Work Plan as well.

ISSUE:

The 2017 Mayor's Housing Summit is scheduled for May 23-24, 2017 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The Summit will cover five topic areas: Finance; Homelessness; Sustainability/Innovation; Policy and Planning; and Neighborhoods. It includes a morning Housing Overview, a Keynote Luncheon, breakout sessions, and a roundtable discussion. A Housing Fair offering information and services to homeowners and renters is planned for Saturday, June 3, 2017.
