Update on the City of San Antonio Smart City Program


SUMMARY:
A briefing on the City of San Antonio Smart City Initiatives approved within the FY 2017 Adopted Budget.


BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

As part of the FY 2017 Adopted Budget, the Mayor and City Council approved funding to support smart city initiatives in the areas of digital connected living, sustainability, and Transportation. The projects included in the budget in the area of digital connected living include WiFi at some city parks, enhanced customer service apps, and digital community Kiosks. Projects included in the area of sustainability include LED streetlights, solar benches, drones for use by the fire department in rescue operations, and cameras to deter illegal dumping. In the area of transportation a San Antonio Traveler Real-time Information Portal (SATRIP) was included in the budget.

In March 2017, the City of San Antonio was one of ten cities across the Country selected to participate in Envision America, a nationwide nonprofit supported by the White House. Envision America aims to connect the know-how and resources of the private sector with the innovative spirit of urban communities to help create America's new smarter future and bring positive, economic, social, and environmental benefits to cities.

The City of San Antonio is not alone in using technology as a way to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve the quality of life of San Antonio residents. There are smart city initiative efforts proposed or currently underway by other San Antonio governmental entities, universities, and private sector that the City could potentially partner or collaborate to provide better services to the community.
