BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

In FY 2017, the City’s Animal Care Services Department (ACS) will support over 40,000 Spay/Neuter surgeries. The 40,000 surgeries will be performed by ACS at the City shelter and through the ACS Community Spay and Neuter program including the two city-owned veterinary clinics. The newest of the city-owned veterinary clinic, located at the Brooks City Based, opened to the public earlier this year.

The Petco Foundation is a national organization that provides grant funding to animal welfare shelters that achieve their mission and vision. The Petco Foundation has an expectation that animal welfare shelters continually strive to achieve a high standard of innovation and are determined to save as many lives as possible with their investment.

In July 2016, ACS applied for a grant through the Petco Foundation seeking $150,000 to allow ACS to provide free Spay/Neuter surgeries at ACS and the new Brooks City-Base Spay/Neuter Clinic. With this grant, the City will be able to provide 1,428 free sterilization surgeries for dogs and cats at the Brooks Clinic through a $100,000.00 professional services agreement with the Humane Society. The Humane Society will perform 5,000 surgeries at the Brooks Clinic from March 2017 to March 2018 of which originally 250 would be provided at no cost and 4,750 at low cost.  This grant allows the Humane Society to provide the community with an additional 1,428 no cost sterilization surgeries for a total of 1,678 no cost surgeries of the 5,000 to be performed at the Brooks Clinic. The remaining $50,000 will be used to support over 700 Spay/Neuter surgeries at Animal Care Services.
