SUBJECT:

2017-2018 Grant Award Approval

SUMMARY:

Staff briefing and possible Board action to approve East Central ISD receiving award from the Pre-K 4 SA Competitive Grants Program with a total value of up to $200,000.


BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

As part of the voter-approved initiative, Pre-K 4 SA provides Competitive Grants to prekindergarten providers to improve quality and access to pre-k four education in San Antonio. Pre-K 4 SA awarded the first round of Competitive Grants in April 2016 for the 2016-2017 school year. To increase the impact of the Competitive Grants program, Pre-K 4 SA released an additional Request for Proposals on May 4, 2017 to solicit responses from Pre-K 4 SA partner school districts that had not previously been awarded a Competitive Grant.

ISSUE:

Pre-K 4 SA received one application from East Central ISD to improve the quality of pre-k four education in their district. The proposal was evaluated by an internal committee and based on this evaluation process, Pre-K 4 SA recommends funding the following district for the 2017-2018 school year.

The grant contract will have a one-year term. To ensure compliance with their grant, the awarded agency will submit monthly performance metrics and will participate in compliance and classroom quality site visits


ALTERNATIVES:

If the Board does not approve the recommended awardees, the contract start date of July 1, 2017 will be delayed and students and teachers will not be able to receive services at the start of the 2017-2018 school year.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Funding for this grant award is available in the FY 2018 Pre-K 4 SA budget which has been approved by the Board of Directors and City Council.
