SUMMARY:
This item will include a summary discussion from the 2017 Mayor’s Housing Summit, held May 23 & 24, 2017 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and Open House held June 3, 2017.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The Mayor’s Task Force on Preserving Dynamic and Diverse Neighborhoods recommended in its May 14, 2015 Report that an annual housing summit be held to “establish a unified housing policy and to support current housing planning and community development efforts to create safe, stable, mixed-income neighborhoods throughout the City.”
The first of these summits was the 2015 San Antonio Housing Policy Summit hosted by Mayor Ivy Taylor on May 15, 2015. The program included a charge from the Mayor to create comprehensive policies that support development and preservation of stable, mixed-income communities. Also included in the Summit were a Best Practices Panel, Keynote Luncheon, and Work Sessions.
The Housing Commission to Protect & Preserve Dynamic and Diverse Neighborhoods included assisting with developing the annual housing summit in its FY 2016 and FY2017 Work Plan.
ISSUE:
The 2017 Mayor’s Housing Summit was held on May 23 & 24, 2017 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The Summit covered six topic areas: Finance and Funding; Homelessness; Innovation; Neighborhoods; Policy and Planning; and Special Topics. It included a morning Housing Overview, a Keynote Luncheon, two sets of breakout sessions, an evening reception, and an Open House held on Saturday, June 3rd.
Attendance exceeded expectations for the 2017 Mayor’s Housing Summit. A total of 237 individuals attended the Professional Development Day held on May 23rd, 265 attendees participated in the Evening Mixer benefitting the San Antonio Housing Authority Educational Investment Fund, and more than 200 registrants attended the ULI Shark Tank event that followed the mixer. The second, and primary, day of the Housing Summit was attended by 397 people from the public and private sectors, and also included many local residents. There were approximately 24 residents that attended the corresponding Open House, held on Saturday, June 3rd.
A post-event survey currently is being conducted by staff in order to improve the summit for future years and results will be compiled in a report to be completed in summer 2017.
