SUBJECT:

World Heritage Office Overview and Work Plan Update

SUMMARY:

In April of 2016, the City established the World Heritage Office for the purpose of planning, coordinating, implementing and managing the World Heritage Work Plan and related projects within the World Heritage Buffer Zone. Input from the community was used to develop the World Heritage Work Plan, which includes tasks and deliverables necessary to enhance the visitor and resident experience around the five San Antonio Missions. City staff will provide an overview of the World Heritage Office and an update.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The World Heritage designation for the five San Antonio Missions will increase visitation and tourism spending, promote the history and culture of San Antonio, and create jobs and small business opportunities. To prepare for this increased activity and to maximize benefits, input from the community was used to prepare the World Heritage Work Plan.

The work plan identifies specific tasks and deliverables, which include the following categories: management and oversight, infrastructure, wayfinding, transportation, beautification, economic development, land use, and marketing and outreach. The work plan is coordinated with the Alamo Master Plan effort. The plan is dynamic and items may be added as a result of additional public input.
