SUMMARY:

A presentation by SA2020 on the social determinants of health

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

SA2020 was initiated in 2010 through a community-wide visioning process. The process attracted thousands of people from San Antonio to discuss and determine what the future of the city should look like. The conversations resulted in 11 cause areas that make up the vision for San Antonio by the year 2020. The 11 cause areas are: arts and culture; civic engagement; community safety; downtown development; economic competiveness; education environmental sustainability; transportation; neighborhoods; family well-being; and, health and fitness.

SA2020 is a nonprofit, 501c3, whose mission is to turn the SA2020 vision into a reality. Molly Cox, President and CEO of SA2020, will discuss the broad view of community health and how SA2020 is facilitating a community-wide approach so San Antonio residents are among the healthiest in the nation.

ISSUE:

The health of the community is affected either directly or indirectly by each of the 11 cause areas in the SA2020 plan. Molly Cox will brief the Committee on the SA2020 plan with a focus on the broader social determinants of health. This information may help guide the work of the Committee in the area of community health.
