SUBJECT:

TXDOT Temporary Closure Multi-Year Agreement - Siclovia


SUMMARY:

An ordinance authorizing the execution of an agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for the temporary street closure of State right of ways on Broadway Street from Parland Place to 4th Street and the temporary street closure of Roosevelt Ave from Lone Star Blvd. to Mitchell St., and may include additional temporary right of way closures at IH37/Nolan Street green space and IH10/Roosevelt Ave green space in connection with the bi-annual Siclovia event hosted by the YMCA for a term of one year with the mutual option to extend and change the Siclovia event date and route each year for up to four additional years, beginning on October 22, 2017.


BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

In 2010, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) received $15.6 million in funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the 2009 Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) Initiative funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. These funds were used to reduce and prevent obesity in children and adults by conducting activities in school and community settings across Bexar County in partnership with several local businesses and organizations, school districts, and other City of San Antonio departments.

As part of the CPPW initiative, Metro Health sponsored the first and second Siclovia events, which took place in October 2011 and March 2012. Siclovia events are open to the public and encouraged citizens to increase the use of bicycles and other forms of physical activity. Both previous events were attended by approximately 55,000 attendees and received positive response from the community.
