Tour of the San Antonio Fire Training Academy
SUMMARY:
As part of the December 2017 Public Safety Council Committee meeting, the Committee will take a tour of the San Antonio Fire Training Academy.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The current San Antonio Fire Training Academy was opened in 2006. Over the years, the academy has trained Fire Department cadets, provided professional development, and served as a location for several community outreach activities.
The academy has made progress in increasing the professional development of the San Antonio Fire Department company officers and chiefs. The majority of our officers now hold Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) certifications such as Fire Instructor I, Fire Instructor II, Fire Officer I, and Fire Officer II. Additionally, the Incumbent Training (ITO) helped to enhance the level of preparedness for those on the frontline, as well as provide company officers and chiefs the opportunity to develop their command skills through roll playing scenarios.
SAFD's fitness program is also valuable resource for the department. The program provides the employees with an opportunity to maintain and progress their physical health. The Fire Training Academy is a one of the many sites within the department that is equipped for daily fitness programming.
Additionally, the Citizens Fire Academy (CFA) allows the Fire Training Academy to be a place that reaches the local community and serve as a link between citizens and those who serve the department. Citizens are able to experience the inner workings of the SAFD.
ISSUE:
The Fire Training Academy serves as an integral part of the San Antonio Fire Department. The academy has been used to train many fire cadets over the years, as well as serve as a connection to the community and professional development for current uniform employees.
