SUBJECT:

Tricentennial Celebration Commission Events Update

SUMMARY:

Update on the San Antonio Tricentennial Celebration and calendar of events for the Tricentennial year.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

San Antonio will commemorate and celebrate the Tricentennial in 2018. As part of the anniversary year, the Tricentennial Commission desired to highlight the community and the many events which make the region a great place to live. With that in mind, a process was created through which local groups and individuals could submit events to become official Tricentennial partners. The criteria for the call for project included diversity, authenticity, and highlighting San Antonio and its history. The community’s response was greater than had been anticipated and over 500 organizations, carrying out over 700 events, were sanctioned by the Commission as official Tricentennial partner events.

With the Tricentennial year officially begun and the enhanced website in place, Tricentennial staff has continued to finalize event details and update the events calendar for the remainder of 2018. The Tricentennial Commission, in reviewing the list of events, decided to create criteria to help highlight and elevate community partner events which best exemplify the Tricentennial celebration’s effort to reflect on the past, celebrate current achievements, and prepare for the next 300 years. The Commission identified the following criteria to select featured events:

A link to the founding of San Antonio

The commemoration of a significant local anniversary

Reflection of unique characteristics of San Antonio’s culture and community

Forward looking or contributes to San Antonio’s legacy

Highlights San Antonio to a regional, national, or international audience

                     Encompasses military or religious significance
