SUBJECT:

Sports License Agreement with the Southwest Jr. Dragons


SUMMARY:

This Ordinance authorizes the Parks and Recreation Department to execute a Sports License Agreement with the Southwest Jr. Dragons for operations and maintenance at the designated sports fields at Miller's Pond Park located in Council District 4 for a five (5) year term.


BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The Southwest Jr. Dragons has established a community presence over the last 40 years. The league utilizes the designated sports fields at Miller's Pond Park to provide organized youth football and cheerleading activities year round; the league served over 130 area youth in 2017.

The current agreement expires on April 30, 2018 and a new Sports License Agreement is proposed to commence on May 1, 2018 and expire December 31, 2023. In lieu of rent, the league shall be responsible for operations and maintenance of the designated sports fields at Miller's Pond Park. In addition, the league will be permitted to operate concessions with proceeds benefitting their program and to offset the cost of operations and maintenance.


ISSUE:

This ordinance authorizes the Parks and Recreation Department to execute a Sports License Agreement with the Southwest Jr. Dragons at Miller's Pond Park. The Agreement will be for a five (5) year term. This action is consistent with City policy to facilitate the use of parks for athletic and recreational activities by the citizens of San Antonio.


ALTERNATIVES:

City Council could elect not to approve this action, resulting in the Parks and Recreation Department maintaining the sports fields at Miller's Pond Park which would have a corresponding budgetary impact.


FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no General Fund impact associated with this action.
