SUBJECT: EWDC Briefing on International Tricentennial Activities

SUMMARY:

The City of San Antonio entertains official relationships around the world, including 11 Sister Cities and two Friendship Cities. Approximately 100 international dignitaries, will visit San Antonio from May 1-6 to take part in various Commemorative Week activities as part of the official Tricentennial celebrations. Dignitaries include representatives of San Antonio sister cities, some members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps from Austin, Dallas, Houston and Washington DC.

BACKGROUND:

Commemorative Week is slated for May 1-6, 2018, honoring the anniversary of the founding of Mission San Antonio de Valero on May 1, 1718, known today as The Alamo. Four days later, the Presidio San Antonio de Bexar was formed to protect the new mission.

Six days of programming span themes of reflection, history and education, commemoration of San Antonio's founding, arts and culture, honoring the military, and preparing for a collaborative future.

The Tricentennial year in general and Commemorative Week in particular, also present a unique opportunity to showcase San Antonio to the world, and to deepen relationships with official partner cities around the globe. Following an invitation form Mayor Ron Nirenberg, San Antonio will welcome international guests from China, Germany, India, Japan, South Korea, Namibia, Mexico, Spain, Taiwan, Canada, Chile, France, Ireland, Brazil and Colombia.

May 2 will highlight the 30th anniversary of the San Antonio-Kumamoto friendship, May 3 will conclude with the official Tricentennial Founders' Day Gala at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, and May 4 will put emphasis on arts and culture.
