A briefing on preventing intimate partner violence through the analysis of risk factors and local resources
SUMMARY:
Dr. Bridger, the City's Public Health Director, will provide a presentation, briefing the Public Safety Committee on the inter-departmental effort to identify and map risk factors and local resources for intimate partner violence.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Intimate Partner Violence is defined as physical violence, sexual violence, stalking and/or psychological aggression by a current or former intimate partner. Historically known as "domestic violence", this type of violence can occur among heterosexual or same-sex couples.
On February 13, 2018, Dr. Bridger provided a presentation on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) to the Community Health and Equity Committee. During this presentation, Domestic Violence was identified as one of the 10 traumatic experiences/ACEs so detrimental to an individual's long-term health. As a result, City Councilmembers asked how the City's Health, Human Services, and Police Departments are working together to address issues such as domestic violence.
The Department of Human Services has utilized Intimate Partner Violence Data to seek domestic violence intervention and prevention services proposals in high risk areas as part of the Human and Workforce Development Services Request for Proposals (RFP). Funding recommendations from this RFP, including services related to addressing domestic violence, will be presented to City Council for approval as part of the FY 2019 Adopted Budget.
