SUBJECT: City Council Project Funds Allocation
SUMMARY:
This ordinance awards grant allocations through the City Council Project Fund (CCPF) to support the following program:
The Magik Theatre: Tickets to Literacy Program.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The City Council Office began administration of CCPF in 2012. At that time, several improvements to the program were made including; implementation of streamlined application, an election year moratorium, and City Council approval allocations exceeding $10,000 to an applicant for the same program, activity, events, good or service.
This ordinance awards a CCPF grant allocation to The Magik Theatre in the approximate of $15,364.54 in support of their Tickets to Literacy program. Funds approved will support this program running from October 2017 through September 2018. To date this fiscal year, Magik Theatre has entertained and educated more than 40,000 pre-K and elementary school children at their home stage. Of those, more than 4,000 attended for free through the Tickets to Literacy program. For many of these students this is their first live theatre performance. By September 2018, Magik will have produced eight full-scale shows based on classical and contemporary children's literature for both its home stage and the expanded outreach at the Empire Theatre, as well as brought seven unique touring performances to schools throughout San Antonio.
Approval of these funds will assist in providing thousands of children access to an educational, cultural, and artistic experience that is unique in this community. Additionally, expenditures on this item comply with CCPF guidelines regarding restrictions and limitation related to the Moratorium.
ISSUE:
This ordinance approves a grant allocation to support The Magik Theatre: Tickets to Literacy program in an amount not less than $15,364.54.
